Ask a supplier for “fireworks for a wedding” and you will get a quotation. It might even be a good one. But it is answering a question nobody has asked yet, because the phrase for a wedding says nothing about the three things that decide what can actually be fired that night: how much clear ground sits between the firing point and the guests, who is licensed to light it, and whether the date leaves enough time to build it.
Those three settle the shape of the order before a single product is chosen. Get them in the right sequence and the shortlist writes itself. Get them wrong and you end up holding perfectly good fireworks that nobody at the venue is willing to light.
The short answer
- Measure the site before you shop. Where NFPA 1123 applies, the minimum spectator distance for aerial shells is 70 ft per inch of mortar bore. A 64 m clear radius is therefore a 3-inch ceiling, no matter what the budget would allow.
- Establish which side of the class line the event sits on. Consumer-grade product can be used far more widely than display-grade, which in most jurisdictions requires a licensed operator and a site permit.
- Work backwards from a date that cannot move. Ten to sixteen weeks from a frozen order to arrival is normal execution time, so most events want the decision made months rather than weeks ahead, and Chinese New Year removes several weeks of production from every calendar year.
Cakes or shells, gerbs or cold spark, loud or quiet: those choices fall out of the three above. This page walks through the constraints first, then what each event type actually buys.
Three Questions That Settle the Order Before You See a Product
Product catalogues are organised by what a firework does. Events are organised by what a venue permits. That mismatch is where most wasted sourcing effort goes, and it is avoidable by answering three questions before opening a catalogue at all.
- How much clear ground can you actually secure? Not the size of the venue. The radius you can keep empty of people, parked cars and structures for the duration of the show. This number sets a hard ceiling on calibre, and it is measured, not estimated.
- Who is going to fire it? A member of staff, or a licensed operator under a permit? The answer determines whether you are buying consumer-grade or display-grade product, and consequently what documentation travels with the goods.
- Is the date fixed, and how far away is it? A wedding date and a national day are both immovable, but only one of them lets you plan a year out. The lead time you have left decides whether custom artwork, sampling and proof-firing — test-firing sample units from the production batch before it ships — are on the table.
None of the three is about the product. They are about space, authority and time, and once they are answered the range of sensible products usually fits on one page.
Consumer or Display: The Line That Runs Through Every Event
Most regulatory systems split fireworks into a tier the general public may buy and use, and a tier reserved for trained professionals. In the European scheme that is the difference between categories F1 to F3 and category F4. In the United States it is the split between the consumer products regulated by the CPSC and display product handled under federal explosives licensing.
Transport classification is a second axis that runs alongside the first without matching it exactly. Display shells normally ship as 1.3G and consumer product as 1.4G, but plenty of professional-only stage items ship 1.4G or 1.4S, because the shipping code describes how the goods behave inside a container rather than who may light them. Treat the shipping code as a freight question and the class tier as a permitting question; where the two line up and where they part company is set out in our guide to 1.3G and 1.4G classification.
What matters for an event is that the class line does not follow the occasion. A wedding can sit on either side of it. A brand launch in a hotel courtyard might sit on the consumer side one week and require a licensed operator the next, purely because the second venue is closer to a residential block. The consequence for a buyer is this: the class decides who may light it, and therefore who has to be hired, permitted and insured before the goods are worth owning. Ordering display-grade product for an event with no licensed operator attached is the most expensive mistake in this category, because the goods are fine and simply cannot be used.
Distance Decides the Shortlist Before Budget Does
Aerial fireworks are specified by the internal diameter of the mortar they are fired from, and the required clear distance scales directly with it. Under NFPA 1123, the code applied to outdoor displays wherever the local authority adopts it, the minimum radius of the display site and the minimum spectator separation distance for aerial shells is 70 ft per inch of internal mortar diameter of the largest shell in the show. That single sentence eliminates more product from more shortlists than price ever does.

Read the ladder in reverse and it becomes a purchasing tool. A public park that can be closed to a 130 m radius supports a 6-inch show. A hotel lawn that can realistically be kept clear to 40 m sits below the 2-inch line on the same table, which is why that job gets built from ground effects with at most a small-calibre accent. Angling the mortars only moves the racks inside that circle; it does not shrink the circle. The venue is not a preference in this calculation. It is the constraint.
Consumer product sold into the European market works differently but points the same way. There the distance belongs to the article rather than to the site: each item is assigned to a category and carries its own printed minimum. The benchmarks behind those categories are 1 m for F1, 8 m for F2 and 15 m for F3, written as minima but with an explicit allowance to sit lower where that suits the article, and manufacturers frequently print more rather than less. Category F4 is professional-only and is not sold on a printed set-back at all: the article carries manufacturer instructions, and the distance that actually applies on the night is set by the operator's risk assessment for that site and signed off with the permit. The working rule is the same in every market: follow whichever is stricter between the figure printed on the article, your permit conditions and what the local fire authority will accept.

Weddings and Private Celebrations
Weddings are the highest-emotion, lowest-clearance category in the trade. The couple has usually seen a video of a 6-inch finale over a lake and the venue is a walled garden with 35 m of usable depth. The job of a good brief is to close that gap early rather than at the rehearsal.
What actually does the work at this scale is ground-level: gerbs and fountains flanking a first dance or a cake moment, sparklers for the send-off tunnel that produces most of the photographs, and short low-level cakes where outdoor firing is permitted. If the site does open up, small-calibre multi-shot cakes and a compact shell finale give the aerial moment without pushing the clearance requirement past what a private venue can hold.
Two constraints come up repeatedly and belong in the conversation before the deposit, not after. Noise is the first: many venues sit near housing, livestock or hospitals and impose a hard limit or an end-time. Quiet is achievable as a design choice, by building the set from fountains, comets, willow and glitter effects and avoiding salutes, but it is a reduction rather than an elimination. Storage is the second: fireworks delivered days ahead need somewhere lawful and climate-appropriate to sit, which in hot markets is its own problem — see storing wedding fireworks in desert conditions.
Corporate Launches, Openings and Daytime Events
Corporate work introduces a constraint the rest of the category rarely faces: the event is often in daylight, and half the aerial repertoire is invisible at noon. A ribbon-cutting at eleven in the morning does not want shells. It wants coloured smoke, daytime comets and confetti or streamer effects that read against a bright sky.
The second corporate constraint is brand colour, and it deserves an honest answer. Pyrotechnic colour comes from metal salts burning at high temperature, which gives a rich but bounded palette; why some colours are harder than others is set out in the chemistry of blue stars. No manufacturer can promise an exact brand hex value. Matching a colour family, and carrying the brand onto printed packaging and casings through private-label production, is realistic and is usually what the marketing team actually wanted.
Stadiums and Sporting Events
Stadium pyrotechnics is a different discipline from display firing, because the audience is not in front of the effects. It is around them, and often above them. Clearance is measured vertically and laterally against a roof line, a scoreboard, seating tiers and a playing surface that has to be undamaged and playable minutes later.
That geometry pushes stadium work toward close-proximity product rather than large shells: gerbs and comet racks along a touchline, flame and mine effects at player entry, and low-noise formats where the crowd is close enough that report effects become a hearing and panic issue rather than a thrill. Buying for a stadium also means buying for repetition and for cues. A goal effect may fire zero times or six times in one match, so inventory is specified per season rather than per event, and the operator needs identical units with consistent timing across the batch. That makes batch-to-batch consistency a procurement requirement, not a nicety, and it is a fair thing to test through pre-shipment inspection and proof-firing before a season's stock ships.
Concerts, Festivals and Indoor Stages
This is the category where the most dangerous assumption lives: that indoor pyrotechnics are simply outdoor pyrotechnics used closer. They are not. Products intended for use in front of a proximate audience are a distinct family with their own construction, output and testing, and in the United States their use is governed by NFPA 1126, the standard covering pyrotechnics before a proximate audience, which addresses permits, operator qualification and audience separation. Which edition binds you is a local question rather than a publication date, because adoption lags revision by years and some authorities amend the text further. Other jurisdictions have their own equivalents, and the venue's own fire authority and insurer sit on top of all of it.
Within that family, the practical shortlist for a stage is gerbs and small fountains for vertical accents, mines and comets fired into an approved clear zone kept separate from performers and audience, and cold spark machines where a tall silver fountain effect is wanted with less fallout and less residue. Cold spark deserves one piece of honesty the marketing omits: “cold” describes how the sparks feel by the time they land, not the discharge itself, which leaves the machine hot enough to burn or to ignite what it touches. That is why these machines sit inside NFPA 1126 rather than outside it: the standard reaches pyrotechnic effect simulation equipment, so the permit, operator qualification and separation requirements come with them. Treat them as a pyrotechnic effect that needs approval, not as a lighting fixture, and put them in the permit application rather than the lighting plot. Festivals sit between the two worlds: an outdoor main stage may run close-proximity effects during sets and a full display at the close of the night, which means two product families, two clearance regimes and often two operators on the same site licence.
Municipal Displays and Public Tenders
City and national-day displays are the one category where the buyer is rarely the user. A municipality tenders, a licensed display company wins, and the fireworks are bought against a specification written months earlier. If you are supplying into that chain, the paperwork is as much the product as the shells are.
This is also where the largest calibres in this article become usable, because the site is closed by ordinance rather than by rope, and that raises the documentation bar: classification per article with UN number, division and compatibility group, net explosive quantity per unit and per carton, and packing data the local magazine and fire authority will both want. One scheduling point is specific to this category. Tenders often award late relative to production lead time, which is how a display company ends up needing a container in eight weeks that ordinarily takes fourteen. Where the event recurs annually, the workable answer is to hold a specification standing between years rather than re-specifying after each award.
Hotels, Resorts and Shows That Repeat
A resort that fires a short show every Saturday is not running events. It is running inventory, and that changes almost every part of the buying decision.
Consumption is predictable, so ordering moves to a replenishment cycle rather than an event countdown, and a year's volume is usually enough to reach factory-direct pricing on a mixed container rather than buying locally at a markup. The binding constraint is storage rather than clearance: a season's product has to sit somewhere lawful, secure and within its temperature range, which in hot coastal markets is the hardest part of the operation. Consistency matters more than novelty here, because the same show runs weekly in front of different guests.

The regulatory column describes the route these events most often take, not a rule. The same wedding can sit on either side of the line depending on the site, and the tier that applies to you is set by your own national and local law. Confirm it with the authority having jurisdiction before you buy.
The Date Will Not Move, and Neither Will the Factory
Event sourcing has a structural problem that ordinary wholesale does not: there is no such thing as arriving a week late. A wedding, a national day or a stadium opener happens once, and stock that clears customs the following Tuesday has no value at all.
The execution figure, from a frozen order — a specification and quantity locked well enough that production can start against it — to arrival, is ten to sixteen weeks: production, dangerous-goods booking, ocean transit and destination clearance. That clock only starts once everything is decided, which is why the planning windows in the table above are longer. Approvals, artwork sign-off and the client changing their mind once all sit in front of the freeze, and three things stretch the window further: custom packaging has to be approved before production rather than during it, some destinations require an import authorisation in hand before the container loads in China, and peak season for the trade is peak season for Class 1 vessel space.
Over all of it sits the one deadline nobody can negotiate: Chinese New Year shuts fireworks production for several weeks each year, with a gradual restart. Whether that matters to you is arithmetic rather than a rule — count your window back from the event date, and if any part of it lands near the shutdown, the order belongs in front of the break. It is worth being precise about the boundary, because event buyers are frequently promised things no overseas manufacturer can deliver.

Can you supply quiet or low-noise fireworks?
A programme can be built to avoid the loud elements, and the difference is large. Noise comes mostly from salute and report components and from the break of larger shells, so a set made from fountains, gerbs, comets, mines, willow and glitter effects in smaller calibres reads as quiet. It is not silent, and any supplier who says otherwise is not being straight with you. What happens if the event is postponed or rained off?
Fireworks do not expire on the date they were bought for. Product kept dry, sealed and within its stated storage conditions carries to the next window, so a postponed show is usually a storage and permit problem rather than a write-off. What does not roll over is the shipment and the paperwork: once dangerous goods are booked and loaded they cannot be returned, and a new date needs its own permit, its own operator booking and, in some markets, a fresh notification to the fire authority. Decide where the goods will sit if the date moves before you place the order, not on the night.
Does the factory also fire the show?

Firing is done by a locally licensed operator or display company under the permit issued for that site, and that relationship sits between you and them. A supplier that offers to handle your local permits or to operate your show from overseas is describing something it cannot deliver.
